Deon Thompson has helped top-ranked North Carolina get off to a good start despite playing without injured star Tyler Hansbrough. Now, just as the reigning national player of the year appears close to returning, the Tar Heels could be losing another key contributor inside. Thompson scored a career-high 20 points to help North Carolina beat Kentucky 77-58 on Tuesday night, his second straight...
Dustin Pedroia could easily be mistaken for a mechanic, carpenter or plumber, most anything except a major leaguer. "I'm not the biggest guy in the world. I don't have that many tools," he said. "If you saw me walking down the street, you wouldn't think I'm a baseball player." Well, not unless he was carrying his AL MVP award. Blake Griffin and Oklahoma learned to never count out Stephen Curry. Griffin had 25 points and a career-high 21 rebounds, freshman Willie Warren added 20 points and the 12th-ranked Sooners overcame the highest scoring game of Curry's career to beat No. 21 Davidson 82-78 on Tuesday night. The early season showcase was played out with first-round draft picks Kevin Durant, Jeff Green and Russell...
Ryan Dempster made the successful switch from closer to starter this season, winning 17 games and helping the Chicago Cubs compile the best record in the National League. Once the postseason rolled around, though, Dempster's spring training prediction that the Cubs would win the World Series fell way short when Chicago was swept in the first round for the second consecutive year.
It was quiet -- too quiet -- in the Boston locker room before the game. On the floor, the Celtics managed to replace Kevin Garnett's intensity just fine. "Not having a great player out there, you definitely miss him," point guard Rajon Rondo said after Boston beat the New York Knicks 110-101 on Tuesday night while Garnett served a one-game suspension. When Texas hired football coach Mack Brown a decade ago, it was the result of a high-stakes national coaching search to find just the right man to lead one of college football's most prestigious programs. Texas decided it didn't want to go through that again when Brown retires, whenever that day comes.
Mark Cuban yelled and cheered from his courtside seat during the game, then high-fived his players after it was over. The boisterous Dallas Mavericks owner didn't act any differently a day after being charged with insider trading. His team, meanwhile, stopped looking like the dysfunctional unit that started the season. Suspended Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones has completed the inpatient portion of his NFL-ordered alcohol treatment and has returned to Texas, where he is hopeful of soon being able to rejoin the team. Jones' attorney, Worrick Robinson, said the player is handing personal matters while waiting for commissioner Roger Goodell to determine if Jones will be reinstated and be able to play again...
With free agency awaiting him in 2010, LeBron James put on a show for the New York metropolitan area and its deep-pocket teams highlighted by length-of-the court sprint to block a dunk by Devin Harris. James had 31 points, eight rebounds and four assists in another dominating performance and the Cleveland Cavaliers rolled to their eighth straight win with a 106-82 decision over the New Jersey Nets... Hall of Fame Racing, the NASCAR team owned by Arizona Diamondbacks executives, will cut its staff even if it secures sponsorship to run a full 2009 season.
