RedFrog's Ramblings (RedFrogND)

I've never had a blog, but plan on trying it out here on UL.  I will 'ramble' on about various things from my game experiences here on UL to my favorite sports team, the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux to my proud membership of the Raider Nation.  Drop in occasionally and check me out!

Still 'Fighting' for our beloved 'Fighting Sioux' 1/27/2011 2:41:00 AM

The long running debate over the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo rages on. A committee is hearing testimony tonight on bills that would give the North Dakota legislature the power to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

The debate over the Fighting Sioux nickname has been the hottest hearing at the capitol. Over 30 people lined up to testify at a hearing to consider legislation to keep the nickname.  Around two-thirds of them support it.

First up were sponsors of the legislation, who contested the attorney general's opinion that the higher ed board has the constitutional power to decide the matter. Some say, it's a decision for the legislature.

Representative David Munson tells us, "I've even heard some people say that passing these bills would be unconstitutional. Well, I say that the board of higher ed may be in the constitution, but they aren't one of the 3 branches of government."

Several tribal members from Spirit Lake and Standing Rock also testified in favor of keeping the nickname.

John Chaske of the Spirit Lake tribe says, "North Dakota board of higher ed and the NCAA together have conjured up an agreement to retire the Sioux nickname without consulting with the Lakota Sioux tribes and the citizens of North Dakota."

But, the higher ed board says reversing their decision will quickly cause many other problems. Grant Shaft of the board says: "One of the consequences is if these bills are passed and become law, we believe almost immediately the NCAA will put us back on their list.

That's the NCAA's probation list. And Shaft says that eliminates hosting post season play. Plus, he says it would cause scheduling problems with other athletic teams.

Testimony is expected to continue for another couple of hours. Committee Chairperson Raeann Kelsch says the committee will have to meet again next week before giving the bills to save the nickname a pass or do not pass recommendation.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A North Dakota lawmaker says the voices of the Sioux people were ignored when the state Board of Higher Education decided to get rid of the University of North Dakota's Fighting Sioux nickname.

The state House's Education Committee is considering three bills aimed at keeping the nickname. They're being taken up almost six years after the NCAA declared the name was hostile to American Indians.

Two bills say UND has to keep the name unless the Standing Rock Sioux tribe says UND can't use it anymore. The third just says UND must keep the name.

Osnabrock Rep. David Monson says Spirit Lake Sioux tribal members who support the nickname asked him to introduce his bill. He says "it's never too late to right a wrong."

Good to see the state sticking up for its own.

As much as I despise the "Sue", I really do hope they are able to keep their name.
