I have been getting badgered by friends to join the Tallahassee Rugby Football Club for some time now, and finally I've given in and I start practice one Tuesday. I kept saying no, and finally a guy about my size kept telling me how fun it was and another guy that broke his back in Iraq basically kept calling me a pussy if I didn't play (easy for him to say, he's 6'5" 230). I was curious if any of you played at all or currently played.
I'm really looking forward to it, but I'm not looking forward to the days after practice and getting my conditioning back up to where it was 5 years ago when I was regularly active. The group of guys I've met so far are great, the team is sponsored by Budweiser and the captain owns a bar that the team frequents post practice... should be a good time. Oh, and if I keep it up I'll be able to say I play rugby, which is pretty damn cool in itself.
I'm mainly concerned with the bevy of injuries I've accumulated over the years playing sports and being a drunk (compressed vertebrae, broken nose, worn out shoulders, ankles and knees) and wondering how they'll hold up on the field when I'm getting tossed around by guys bigger than me (I'm 6'1" 200). The back is the thing that concerns me the most, that and losing teeth (I would not be happy if years of orthodontist work go down the tubes with a shoulder to the mouth).
I'll let you all know how it goes, I'm in terrible shape and this first practice is going to be hell in the Florida heat... I promise I won't post any photos of my Zulu if I break out and score sometime soon.
Oh, and here is your obligatory "Mooj is still in college photo of the day"...
(Note how awesome my shirt is)
