Loafing with Loaf (Loaf31)

I will talk about pretty much anything and everything.  The Pittsburgh Penguins/Steelers/Pirates and Liverpool Soccer, will take up most of the space, but be prepared for the unusual topic.

Hopefully this will be somewhat interesting.

RIP Mellon Arena 4/8/2010 7:44:00 AM

This is a bittersweet night for me.  I cannot believe that tonight will be the final Pittsburgh Penguins Regular Season home game at the Mellon Arena.  It will be the 1,667th and final game (pending the playoffs).

The Pens are having more than 50 former players comeback tonight and send Mellon Arena offin style. http://penguins.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=523981

It is also the Pens annual "Shirts off of Backs" Night......here is to hoping that I can win something tonight....

I have so great memories of this place, and also a few heartbreaking memories.

Where to begin????

I have been going to games for 25 years, the last 4 as a season ticket holder.

Here are some of my memories of the old barn.....these are all games where I was in attendance.

Great memories

  • 1997 Mario's "Last Home Game" before 1st retirement
  • 1998 Kaspar absolutely KILLING Lindros
  • 1999 Game 6 vs Devils
  • 2000 Mario RETURNS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • 2001 Eastern Conference Semifinals Game 6
  • 2004 Morozov shows his pride
  • 2005 Sid's first NHL Goal
  • 2005 Sid's Shootout Winner vs Habs
  • 2006 Geno's Lemieux-like goal vs Brodeur
  • 2007 Lemieux Makes a historical announcement that the Pens will stay in Pittsburgh for the next 30 yrs
  • 2008 Malone's GWG in Gm 2 vs Ottawa
  • 2008 Orpik's "Shift"
  • 2009 Geno's Backhand Goal vs Carolina
  • 2009 Stanley Cup Finals especially Game 6

Not so Great Memories

  • 1996 Tom Fitzgerald's East Conf Finals GWG from just inside Blueline
  • 2000 Keith Primeau's GWG in 5 OT
  • 2008 Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals and watching the Red Wings skating the Cup on OUR Ice

So as you can see there are way more Great memories here....... I know that I am forgetting a lot, but that is to be expected.

They say that the hardest thing in life is saying goodbye.......well hopefully i will not have to say goodbye until early June, with Sid skating the Cup one more time........

Goodbye Mellon, Hello Consol

LETS GO PENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

im with ya man..

all those you posted i was at as well. so many more that its to hard to name. goes for not so great ones as well!!

the one that stands out to me was Mario scoring on the rebound to complete the comeback vs the Hawks in the 92 Cup Finals. i swear to god i thought the building was gonna crumble!!

the not so great that stands out. when Stevens went face first on the ice vs the islanders in 93. Pens tie it late, lose in OT!! STUNNED!!

i cant wait to go to the game tonight!!

Sad to see old arenas go, but the Igloo is a terrible rink. I went to one game back in Sid's rookie year and I couldn't believe they were still playing there. I think that was a year or two before the new arena was approved. Something about peeing in a trough is just disturbing in this day and age.

I love the history of the NHL, but sometimes it's time for a change. Hopefully the Pens success will continue in their next barn.

PS - Leafs beat the Pens in OT that game. Kaberle I believe.

Like drsieb said, it's sad to see the history go but I think the Pens and their fans will really enjoy the new arena.

And boo the Penguins!

it is not a terrible rink. the rink is just fine!! just everything else is old lol.

why couldn't ya believe they were still playing at the igloo? nothing wrong with it in general. just an inconvenience on not having updated concessions and restrooms etc.

im pumped for the CEC, but typical cookie cutter corporate arena. all will be high tech etc inside, obviously wont ever hold a candle to watching a game at the Igloo!! wont even be close..

I guess I couldn't believe that they hadn't gotten a new arena yet. Although, the years before Sid were a dark time for Pittsburgh. Poor fan support, lack of corporate sponsorship, bankruptcy talk and unstable ownership.

Glad to see they've righted the ship...hopefully whatever plagued them when they were cellar dwellers doesn't happen if they should ever fall from the elite again.

I wont shed a tear when the Blackhawks close it down and hoist the cup in the Igloo. well, maybe tears of joy. Be sure they invite Jean Claude Van Damme when they implode it.

Boo the Penguins!
