TV buying help! 1/5/2009 1:57:00 PM

I expect to replace my main TV over the next few weeks and any input would be appreciated. My old TV still works great but I feel it is time for a change!  What I have now is a +7 year old Panasonic projection TV  47" (480p/1080i).

As you would imagine it will be mainly be used for playing my 360 & watching HD sports/movies (Blu-ray).

I am not looking to get anything smaller so I am looking at one between 46”-52”.

Quality of speakers is not a factor as I have a home theater set up but it would need to have at least 3 HDMI inputs (preferably all in the rear).

It does not have to be 1080p but I would prefer if it was. I am looking to pay less then $ 2,000 and no more then $ 1,500 (if possible).

What Brand would you suggest?

Would you get a Plasma or a LCD (120 Hz)?

Thanks in advance for all your input!

This is the TV I just bought...

61" DLP but no bulbs, uses an LED...

This is a stunning set for the price.

check out the samsung 52inch 650 series. running around 1999.99 on sale right now. 1080p 120hz etc.

IMO 120hz is overated..

you can also check out the samsung 550 series 1080p doesnt have 120hz and you could prob find it on sale for around 1500.00..

If you have a Costco near you, they usually have a little better pricing, and they extend the manufacturer's warranty to 2 years w/ in home service. I have a Vizio 47" 1080p LCD, and it has been excellent. It doesn't have the 120mhz refresh rate, but I don't ever experience ghosting or blurring when I play Xbox or PS3. I bought mine for $1399. If your watching blu-ray, your going to want 1080p for sure.

Crackin-Yes we have a Costco nearby and I am going indeed to check it out. Fiddy-Yep it could be that 120hz is overated.

i would agree with fiddy. I sell tvs and i would say either the 46" or 52" Samsung 650. It has a very sleek look, 1080p, 120 hz, the contrast i believe is 40,000 or 50,000:1.. just ridiculous.

if you didnt want to go with a mountable tv then the Samsungs that use the LED give an exellent picture, esp. for gaming but you need to be seated more directly infront of the set. the 650 will be a little bit more but will give you the best angles and be more colorful

remember though, the contrast ratios you see 40,000 to 1 etc all those are false number per say.

I got a 32 in sharp aquos last christmas and i love it. They have those new oled aquos out now i think, that are million to 1 ratio. Not real sure what the pricing are on those though. I would love to have a bigger version of my TV, but the room I have mine in now is too small for a bigger TV. I'm pretty sure you can get a 46" aquos for 1500 or less. I've heard HHgregg isn't a bad place to get a tv if there's one around you

mellow, i think you and i have the same tv if i remember correctly. im in same bout you are the room its in is a small and i mean small game room and 32 looks huge lol.

moving into a new house this week though, so i will def look for a bigger one myself.

yea theres no standard for contrast ratios but u can certainly see the difference with certain tvs.. esp for gaming or using it with blu-ray.

i would def. stay samsung if your going to go LCD.. Sonys a lil overpriced with Sharp and prob LG options. No disrespect, but I would disagree with a couple of these guys with the Vizio, unless your looking for just price value and not so much overall longjevity of the set...

agreed.. sonys def a bot overpriced BUT, you can get their S series as well as samsungs 530 series for less than a grand in the 40 inch range. which IMO isnt bad at all.

IMO to save a buck or two, look at those models above in the 46 inch range.

vizios to me are trash for a main tv. IMO they are great secondary rec room or even bed room tv's that you dont watch all that much. so ya could save some coin by doing that.

Thanks for the input guys! Right now I am leaning towards a Samsung 52" LCD. (The 550 model as there is a big premium for the 650).

Well I have just purchased my set. I was leaning towards a Samsung but got a Sony Bravia instead. I got the 52" LCD (120 Hz), model KDL-52W4100 as this allowed me to get a Blu-ray player with 3 movies for $ 99 and a nice stand (that I needed) for $ 100. Thanks again to all for your input.

This was great... I was looking for something to hang overtop my fireplace in my living room... I don't use the FP in my living room at all though. I've been in my house now for 4 years and i've only used it once. I only use the fireplace in my basement where I do all my gaming. I have the Samsung DLP 50inch down there. Got it when I moved in and still looks great. So I def may stay in the Samsung family. But whatever i get, its going to have to be the right fit for my living room.

The Samsung LCDs are great. I have a 40 inch and love it. Dont' spend the extra money on the 120hz, they actually make some movies look weird.

I just bought a samsung 52" LCD 5 series 60mhz & all I've gotten is excellent results. You should definitely go that route.
